When Laguna Beach, California’s Thalia Surf Shop owner Nick Cocores’ discovered that the art gallery next door was packing it in he realized it was the perfect opportunity to not only expand his retail footprint, but also to partner with a popular brands.
“We approached Vans with the space coming available and asked them if they wanted to work with us,” Cocores said (pictured right with Steve Van Doren). “They were totally supportive and wanted to get on board. And so here we are.”
Thalia has carried Vans since the shop opened in 2001 but because the the cozy size of the shop the shoes were limited to a small wall section where Cocores was able to display 25-30 pairs of shoes. But now with close to 900 feet devoted to the brand he can obviously show more. “We can probably have 100 shoes in here now,” he said looking over the new Vans Thalia Surf Shop space.
The former publisher of Transworld Skateboarding Magazine has jumped back in the action media game with a new title for the other team. Source Interlink’sAction Sport Group/Grind Networks announced last night that Jamey Stone is their new director of marketing. Stone will reportedly “oversee and direct the group’s marketing initiatives and business development operations.”
“Working for the ASG / Grind Networks is a huge honor,” said Stone, who grew up in Oceanside, Calif., surfing up to the professional level and skateboarding in the underground San Diego skate scene. He lives there still today with his wife and two children. “Growing up reading SURFER, SURFING and SkateBoarder, I never imagined that I would now be a part of this amazing family. I am very excited about all of the great things on deck for ASG / Grind Networks and look forward to adding to an already amazing legacy.”
We’re glad to see one of the most authentic, hardworking guys in skateboarding media back on board.
Somewhere in the beginning of the waiting period of the 2010 O’Neill World Cup of Surfing we lost track of what was going on. We checked in lay day after lay day, and then we’d get completely caught off when the event would actually run. turns out Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro, 28, won for the men and the 16-year-old Australian Tyler Wright won the women’s event. How? We have no idea. We didn’t catch one wave.

It is that time of year again. For those wondering why no on in the skateboard industry is returning their emails or getting that stuff that promised out, it’s because they’re all at the Skate Park of Tampa for what has become one of the most important contests in skateboarding—the 17th Annual Tampa Am (December 2-5, 2010).
We were planning on watching the event online live, but it would appear that we’re out of luck, according to post on the SPoT website but there will be “tape delay” coverage.
Fuel TV that usually does the live webcast had some budget cuts and can’t do it this year. Colin Clark, Joe Pelham, and I [Rob Meronek] are all going to not go straight to the bar right after the Contest each night and instead go straight to our offices to put together the video coverage and photos from the day to post right away on the site. Sounds like just the thing you’d want to do after already working a 12 hour day. I’ll take it, though. I appreciate every minute of this good time that counts as hard work. The “do a documentary about yourself” virus seems to be turning into a epidemic. In the past it appeared that documentarians would select a person, event, or topic and create a documentary with or without cooperation of the subject. These days it seems that the best way to turn up a career is to create a documentary about yourself. Count in the Bones Brigade on the turning up the heat on the past.
On Monday, November 29th at Los Angeles International Airport, seven individuals that have had an extreme influence on skateboarding sat down to discuss work on a documentary of their experience. They met at the Encounter restaurant in the middle of the airport to begin work on this monumental film. . . Stacy wrote, “Those skaters known as the Bones Brigade are now old enough to take a look back. At a time in the 80’s when many people were mourning the second death of skateboarding, the Bones Brigade through passion, drive, creativity and a surprising sense of teamwork redefined the sport for their time and the future”.
People write autobiographies all the time, so there’s really no reason for us to be down on Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, Rodney Mullen, Tommy Guerrero and Stacy Peralta for making a film about how great they were, because it’s true—they were great. We’d just appreciate it more if someone else was saying it.

If all the product at January Surf Expo show in Orlando, Florida weren’t enough Quiksilver will be holding their All 80s All Day Vert Challenge at Surf Expo. It probably wouldn’t be out of line for us to assume that the event might possibly include a visit by Tony Hawk. He went last year. It’s always good to see his blonde 80s mop haloed in neon.
The event is open to the public, but Surf Expo attendees will get VIP admission which is better than having to travel all the way to Huntington Beach. You going?
